The Black-and-White Ball
“What do you mean, we’re trapped?” George stepped forward and steered Bess out of the way. “Here, let me try it.”
George had no success, either. She rattled the knob, threw her weight against the door, and finally resorted to giving it a couple of powerful karate kicks. Nothing worked.
“I guess I need to hit the gym more often,” she said breathlessly. “Do you have your lock-picking kit with you?”
Nancy shook her head. “No.” She went up to the door, got down on her knees, and studied the knob carefully.
“The ghost must have followed us out here and locked us in,” Bess said, looking around nervously.
Nancy heard a car being started. The sound wasn’t coming from Excelsior Street, but from somewhere on the other side of the warehouse. Nancy jumped to her feet and ran across the vast floor to a grimy, many-paned window. She got there in time to see a rusty yellow car screeching down an alley.
Nancy squinted, trying to make out the license plate number. But the car was already too far away.
George and Bess ran up to her. “What’s going on?” Bess asked Nancy.
“I think that was our so-called ghost, or one of the ghost’s accomplices,” Nancy said, pointing out the window. “My guess is that the person called and left the message with Hannah for us to come out here. Then, just as Bess said, he or she followed us to the warehouse and locked us in.”
“I thought it was weird that Mandy would send us to this place,” George said. “You know, Daphne could have called your house and pretended to be Mandy. The two of them have similar voices.”
“That’s true,” Nancy agreed. “The question is, why would Daphne—or whoever it was—want to lock us in here?”
Bess glanced around nervously. “Here’s a more important question. How are we going to get out?”
Nancy, Bess, and George spent the next hour trying to find a way out of the warehouse. They couldn’t break a window, since all the windows had security bars on them, and the other doors had chains and padlocks.
“We haven’t tried screaming for help yet,” Bess pointed out as Nancy and George searched the room for tools they could use to dismantle the security bars. She went up to one of the windows and began screaming, “Help! Help!”
“Hey, Bess? I don’t think anyone’s listening,” George said. “We seem to be stuck in no-man’s-land here.”
Nancy picked up some rusty screws from the floor, stared at them helplessly, then let them fall to the ground. She was beyond frustrated. They were trapped in an abandoned warehouse in the middle of nowhere, and in the meantime whoever was responsible for the shenanigans at Heights House was probably setting a new plan in motion for the evening wedding.
Then Nancy noticed something she hadn’t noticed before. The security bars on one of the windows seemed to be askew. She stepped forward to take a better look at the window, which was about four feet up the wall. Two of the bars were rusted through at the bottom.
